Assirtidi è il nome dato da Plinio il Vecchio alle isole del Golfo del Quarnaro, fra l'Istria e la costa croata. Terra storicamente italiana: l'Istria appartenne alla X Regio augustea, e poi allo Stato da Mar della Serenissima assieme alle isole quarnerine e a tutta la costa dalmata fino a Durazzo, Corfù e oltre. Leoni alati di pietra e alcuni relitti linguistici sopravvivono qua e là sulle isole e la costa. Celebri i versi di Dante, che afferma: "sì com' a Pola, presso del Carnaro,
ch'Italia chiude e suoi termini bagna».
Poi ci sono state le guerre, le orribili guerre. Tra la Prima e la Seconda l'Italia ha rivendicato queste terre e per un breve periodo ne ha di nuovo tenuto il possesso. Altri tempi, che non possiamo pensare di giudicare con le categorie mentali di oggi. In ogni caso la storia recente del Novecento ha deciso altrimenti, vi sono state tragedie da entrambe le parti (forse, un po' più dalle parti degli esuli istriano-dalmati).
E' però ormai passato molto tempo. Nessun rimpianto, ma un po' di nostalgia sì, per queste bellissime isole galleggianti su un mare color zaffiro.

Assirtidi is the name given by Plinio il Vecchio to the islands of the Kvarner Bay, between Istria and the Croatian coast. This is an historical Italian land: Istria belonged to the Augustean X Regio Venetia et Histria, and then to the Venetian Stato da Mar together with the Kvarner islands and the entire Dalmatian coast down to Durres, Corfu and beyond. Stone lions on the walls and some "fossil" language survive here and there in the islands and the coast. Dante says: "yes as in Pola, near Carnaro,
which closes Italy and wets its borders. "
Then there were the wars, the horrible wars. Between WWI and WWII Italy claimed these lands, and for a short time it helded possession again. Old times, that we aren't able to understand with nowadays mental categories. In any case, the recent history of the twentieth century decided otherwise. There have been tragedies on both sides (perhaps, a little more on the side of the Istrian-Dalmatian exiles).
However, a long time has passed. No regrets, but a bit of nostalgia, for these beautiful islands floating on a sapphire-colored sea.
