Volterra è una bellissima cittadina toscana di origine etrusca, ricca di monumenti medievali e situata su un bel colle panoramico.
E' molto frequentata dai turisti ed in questo sito ci sono già molte panoramiche di Volterra.
Nessuno però sa che a Volterra c'era uno dei più grandi manicomi italiani.
Tutti i manicomi italiani furono dismessi dal 1978 e Volterra non fece eccezione.
Quello che vediamo è ufficialmente il Cimitero di Sanfinocchi, ma tutti lo chiamavano il cimitero dei matti, cioè il posto dove venivano seppelliti i degenti del manicomio.
Lo scopo di questo cimitero particolare non era crudele, perche i degenti dei manicomi spesso venivano seppelliti in fosse comuni e con questo cimitero veniva loro garantita una degna sepoltura.
L'effetto che si ha adesso però è di grande tristezza ed abbandono, anche perchè dopo la chiusura dei manicomi, nessuno si è più preso cura di questo cimitero, in cui non è possibile entrare.
Persone che vivevano in vita segregati, finivano segregati anche dopo morti.
Non si può capire bene se non si conosce la condizione in cui vivevano i pazienti psichiatrici in passato.

What we see is officially the Sanfinocchi Cemetery, but everyone called it the cemetery of the mad, that is, the place where the patients of the mental hospital were buried.
The purpose of this particular cemetery was not cruel, because the patients of the mental hospitals were often buried in mass graves and with this cemetery they were guaranteed a dignified burial.
The effect that we have now, however, is one of great sadness and abandonment, also because after the closure of the mental hospitals, no one took care of this cemetery, which is not possible to enter.
People who lived segregated in life, ended up segregated even after death.
You cannot understand well if you do not know the conditions in which psychiatric patients lived in the past.
