On this natural bastion, dividing the Padana plain from the mountain, in the Cold War period, was built a NATO radar control base in connection with the missile launch base located in Pian del Cansiglio (Pian del Cansiglio is also visible in the pano). Closed operationally in 1977, it was definitively abandoned in 1979.
All military equipment has been dismantled and now the area is called Piazza della Pace (Peace Square), and is used as a belvedere.
The view from there is really great. Again in this case the visibility was good, but not great.

The name of the mountain, Pizzoc, etymologically comes from the German language "Spizt Hoch".

The Cold War should be over, Giuseppe. Whoever believes it will be blessed. He is now entering his hot phase. If the US have released to this point, they have created themselves elsewhere thousands new.
But I understand your joy, because the view over the country is already great.

Complimenti per le notizie.

Credo però che la cima del Pizzoc (da cui effettivamente ho goduto visioni più nitide di questa, soprattutto con condizioni di luce più radenti - autunnali/invernali - in grado di spingere lo sguardo fino alla Laguna, da un lato, e dall'altro fino alla cima della Croda del Beco, estrema propaggine del Veneto a ridosso del Sudtirolo) debba essere ricordata anche come la cava (di cui resta la grande voragine inquadrata) da cui sono stati estratti i calcari per fare il calcestruzzo della diga del Vajont. Credo che il basamento della teleferica che faceva scendere il materiale in Val Lapisina sia ancora visibile alla destra del rif. Vittorio Veneto - a proposito, è ancora/già aperto? Fino a alcuni anni fa si arrivava in cima per rimanere a becco asciutto.
Il luogo è ricco di altre suggestioni. Dal Cansiglio, fino al 1797 il "bosco da reme di San Marco", dove spero che tu ti sia goduto una passeggiata nella faggeta, al Bus de la Lum e al Bus de la Genziana, orride foibe carsiche; al villaggio cimbro di Vallorch (immagino che i Cimbri siano cari a Alberto) di antica origine, uno dei tanti insediamenti prealpini (Val dei Mocheni, zona degli Altipiani) fondati dai "barbari" scacciati dalle pianure dai Romani.
