Eilean Donan Castle is one of the most iconic images of Highlands. The first fortified castle was built in the mid 13th century and stood guard over the lands of Kintail. Since then, at least four different versions of the castle have been built and re-built as the feudal history of Scotland unfolded through the centuries.

Probably with the sun the photo would look much better. But in Scotland I have found only rain, rain and rain.

Great! For some reason it reminds my to "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", at least the final scenes :-) (I can hear the scoffing French soldier ...)

... effectively Eilean Donan Castle was film location for a couple of movies (Highlander etc. ...)

Thank you very much for your comments. Yes, very films were shot in Eilean Donan Castle. It reminds me so much to "Highlander".
The location for the Castle and village of Glenfinnan in Highlander was Eilean Donan Castle and the land now occupied by the castle car park and visitor center. There are also scenes filmed from the bridge and from the hill above the castle.

Really good panorama picture of the castle, suggesting a historic place. We fled quickly when we saw the tourist amenities with large car park and visitor center and read that the castle is mostly rebuilt early in the 20th century. The weather is actually not that bad for the area, given that mountain tops are free and not hidden in the mist. Cheers, Martin

Hello Martin. I think the charm of the castle (and the fact that it has been chosen as the location of many famous movies) does not depend on the castle itself, but its magnificent position.

"It is King Arthur and these are the knights of the round table. Who's castle is this?" ;-D

Great panorama! Saluti Werner
