The Isonzo or Soca or Sontig is a 138-kilometre long river that flows through western Slovenia and northeastern Italy.
During World War I, it was the scene of bitter fighting between Italians and Austrians (12 Battles of the Isonzo).
After the World War II, the area remained on the border between NATO and the communist world.
Only recently has it been a quiet area.
