Battiglia di Caporetto / 12. Isonzoschlacht
He participated in the so-called Battle of Caporetto (12. Isonzoschlacht), in which, although he was only a lieutenant, he played an important role.
He left Tolmino on 24 October 1917 and on 26 October had already reached and conquered Mount Matajur.
For the conquest of Matajur he received the highest decoration to the value of the German Empire, the Pour le Mérite.
The pano was taken by me during the descent from Mount Matajur and Rommel, like me ;-) could begin to see the fertile plains of Friuli, which would soon reach.
It is fun to know that he was nicknamed "the desert fox", but he began his career on the snow in the Alps.
Obviously I do not want to celebrate Rommel, who was eventually defeated, but only to remember a little-known historical episode.
Rommel is a war criminal for me (siehe z. B. http://www.spiegel.de/spiegel/print/d-40616081.html).
