Valle del Silencio is the name of the upper section of Valle Ascencio.
Guarded by the sheer walls of Fortaleza and Escudo, it is perhaps the most remote and mysterious corners of the Paine. Technically, it is accessible only with a climbing permit for the surrounding peaks.

Great! I'm glad you applied for a climbing Permit ;-)

The four climbers from Punta Arenas who truly had the permit were waiting since 20 days at Campamento Japones. Since the permit lasts 30 days, even for Chilean citizens, they were starting to become nervous.
Incidentally, they are somewhere in the picture: believe it or not, I was not alone in the Valle del Silencio that evening! Namely, they showed up at Japones after me, after having transported climbing gear below the walls.
But when the following morning rose once more in a stormy mood, two of them got discouraged and headed back to Punta Arenas for a break of a few days inside civilization and, I guess, for food more decent than the content of the plastic bags hanging from the makeshift roof of Japones, against the attack of rats.
In July 2016, on the road to Chisto, I brought the greeting of the four Chilean climbers to Fabio Leoni, the owner of the Vertical Sport shop in Trento, and the man who opened many routes on these walls. They had met some years before in Canada, while in search of powder snow...
Sorry for your nice comment on the Valle del Frances that has been lost with the panorama. But you know that now, to speed up a bit the publication of old works, I cancel whichever objects remain too patently ignored.
