The Crete Senesi are one of my favorite landscapes. When I can, I go back to photograph them.
This is the same framing of a pano of Werner Schelberger, but when I took it, I did not know....

Giuseppe, why are many of these villages built on top of the hill?

Hello Mentor. There are not many villages in the Crete Senesi. In the Middle Ages there were some small castles. Now there are some agriturismo and some farmhouse. The soil consists of a very particular type of clay, where it can grow only grain and a bit of sunflowers. Once it was a very poor area. Now tourism has brought a bit of prosperity.
In Mucigliani there was a small castle (now destroyed). Now there is a small group of farmhouses and a small church. Castello di Leonina now is instead a beautiful, but rather expensive hotel.

The yellow colour of the hills is the highlight for me.
