The Augustinian Abbey of Novacella (Augustiner-Chorherrenstift Neustift) is one of the most prestigious monasteries of the Alps, as well as a large complex of religious and civil buildings.
The abbey, since its establishment in 1142, has been a place of shelter for pilgrims coming from Northern Europe and headed to Rome, after the fatigue of crossing the Alpine passes. The abbey, as we see in pano, is surrounded by wide vineyards producing fine wine for the refreshment of pilgrims and monks ;-) |
