The seat of the Papacy has not always been Rome. For 68 years, from 1309 to 1377, the residence of the Popes was in Avignon (Southern France). This Gothic palace was their seat.
The Papal Palace (Palais des papes) in Avignon is probably the largest medieval Gothic building.
