The Cathedral is a Roman Catholic Church and the mother church of the Archdiocese of St. Louis. The work began in 1907 and was completed in 1914. The church was designed as a replacement for the previous Cathedral of St. Louis located near the Gateway Arch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basilica_of_St._Louis,_King_of_France). I have a pano ready but not yet published (pictures from 2010).
An interesting fact is that the old cathedral of St.Louis reamains the only building which was not torn down for the construction works for the new park along the Mississippi river which hosts today the Gateway Arch. The new Cathedral was designated by Pope John Paul II in 1997 and holds a masterpiece in mosaic installation. More than 41'000'000 glass pieces (tesserae) in more than 7'000 different colors were plugged. The construction for it began in 1912 and was only finished in 1988 ! For those who are interested in details of the Cathedral and wanted to explore the Cathedral, I found this Online-Tour: http://cathedralstl.org/parish/online-tour/ Canon EOS 400D, ~200° 16 landscape pictures at 18mm (APS-C) f/3.5 1/30s ISO800 handsfree. Color temperature 3050° Kelvin thanks to Guiseppe M. for recent inspiration on his work #16347 :-) Trivia: The pano is perfectly being viewed on a large notepad. By fixing the automatic alignment adjustment and due to the overhead projection, the line of sight is ALWAYS correct ! Check this link and you can almost see the glass tiles (1000 pixel height): http://static.panoramio.com/photos/original/113039163.jpg |

The church also is very beautiful, but, from the artistic point of view, I prefer the Baptistery of Florence :-).
Ciao, Alvise
Greetings, Alberto.
@Alvise - yes, so far to the West there aren't that many of these kind of churches. But there are some ... look at this list (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cathedrals_in_the_United_States).
... like an opera in the jungle - somehow your comment reminded me about Fitzcarraldo :-D
Herzliche Grüße, Matthias.
Greetings Wolfgang
