The Claerwen reservoir and dam in Powys, Wales, were built to provide water to satisfy the needs of the increasingly demanding city of Birmingham. Completed in 1952 the constructed mainly of concrete, the exterior of the 355m long dam is faced in local stone to harmonize with other older dams nearby. Masonry work was carried out by 100 Italian stonemasons. It took six years to complete the 60m high dam which retains 48,300 million litres of water.
