SOLVED RIDDLE.

Lake Pietranzoni (Lago Pietranzoni) is only a farm pond for watering cows and horses. But it is in a very suggestive position in the Gran Sasso.
On the left you can see the Corno Grande (2912 meters). It is part of the Gran Sasso massif and is the highest peak of the Apennine Mountains.

You show a landscape here, which is too impressive to be forgettable or interchangeable. Nearby are to find: A large city with a large medieval core, a special research institute hidden deep in the mountains and the place of a very spectacular escape of a very special prisoner.

Memories
I remember, w slept somwhere there year ago. And horses woke me up. Campo imperatore - awesome place. Next day I climbed to Crono Grande.

I have not been there but it is definitely on my ToDo list.

I would not have known, until Konrad came.

As a joke I wanted to write something like "Sasso Lungo on the left hand side", for the rock reminded me of the Dolomite mountain.
It would not have been so terribly wrong...

@Wolfgang: I did not think this place was well-known. And you have been very accurate.
1) Nearby there is the city of L'Aquila. It is a very beautiful medieval town, but was hit by the earthquake of 2009. It is now being renovated. But in Italy these things take a long time ;-)
2) Under the Gran Sasso there are research laboratory for particle physics.
3) In 1943 at Campo Imperatore was imprisoned Benito Mussolini. He was freed by German paratroopers sent by Hitler. But probably, for Italians, it would have been better if he had not been freed ;-)

@Konrad and Jens: You have been in many interesting places...

@Arne: Even in my opinion, the mountain, view from this position, resembles the Sasso Lungo (Langkofel). And I was hoping that someone would say that was the Langkofel ;-)

I like this landscape! If I come sometime to Italy, I go there.

Very nice pano and landscape - I guessed myself but it was very difficult. At least I could say not within the Alps :-) VG HJ

Great landscape - it could also be a setting for a Western ;-) ...
