Aufnahmestandort: Isola del Lazzaretto Nuovo (1 m)      Fotografiert von: Alvise Bonaldo
Gebiet: Italy      Datum: 16.5.2009
This is the real nature and aspect of Venice lagoon. It's not only water, but over all it's full of wide strips of land, named "barene", emerging only few centimeters above sea level. These islands are repeatedly covered by the water, during high tide, so only the most resistant grass can grow on them. These are ideal locations for migratory and marsh birds.
In ancient times, almost all the islands in Venice lagoon were inhabited by monks and other religious people, who built monasteries and convents. This island, named Lazzaretto Nuovo, from 15th up to end of 18th century was used to recover and check people, ships and goods coming to Venice from Near and Middle East, to prevent risks of contamination by pest.

A most interesting glance beyond touristic mainstream scenery. I like it very much.
