Location: Vitorchiano (285 m)      by: Giuseppe Marzulli
Area: Italy      Date: 16 August 2014
Vitorchiano is placed among the Cimini mountains, 90 km north from Rome. This old mediaeval town is famous for a typical grey stone (called "peperino") used, since the Etruscan age, for buildings and other activities.
As you can see, the town is set on huge blocks of "peperino" with steep slopes overhanging.

Comments

It is absolute fascinating to see these slim houses side by side. It looks as if each one is backed by its neighbour.
Kind regards, Matthias.

Hello Matthias. In a sense, it's just like you say. It is not unusual in the medieval town that houses are supporting each other.
The houses seem to me teeth inserted in their gums :-).

hm, a jawbone with inserted teeth - also a very good description of what we see here ;-).
Kind regards, Matthias.

Una variazione su Pitigliano!

I think that more than a variation of Pitigliano (pano 15950), is a variation of Orvieto (pano 13837). Of course, Orvieto is largest and most famous. But I went to look for beautiful places, but less known :-).
